DATE AND WETHER JOURNAL - OPENING ROUTINE
** THE POWER OF ROUTINES **
Do you have an opening routine in your ESL class?
Use the DATE & WEATHER JOURNAL as an OPENING ROUTINE with your grade 1 and 2 students.
Use engaging songs from the suggested websites as a springboard for vocabulary learning and rehearsal. The power of routines help you manage your class more effectively as well as develop students’ autonomy.
HOW TO USE IT:
- Print pages 2 & 3 (on both sides) and give one copy to each student. Each page side has 4 journals to complete. Each double-sided copy should last 8 classes. Students should complete one journal per class.
- Use page 4 (first months of the school year) to project on the whiteboard.
- Use page 8 (lastmonths of the school year) to project on the whiteboard.
Personally, I make a double-sided copy that lasts 8 classes. The numbers 1-4 help students stay in the same « rectangle » . The first two classes I do it just on the whiteboard. I’ll then introduce the worksheet and it works a lot better! This first two classes also give me time to present the Hello, How’s the Weather and the Days Song.
