Connecting Words Toolbox Task Cards 

The Connecting Words Toolbox is an engaging task card activity designed to help students practice using connecting words (transition words) correctly in sentences. Students “open” their toolbox by reading each task card and choosing the correct connecting word to complete a fill-in-the-blank sentence.

Each task card includes a sentence with three multiple-choice options, encouraging students to think about meaning, sentence flow, and logical relationships between ideas . Students must decide which connecting word best fits the context, such as showing cause and effect, addition, contrast, or sequence.

This activity is especially effective for ESL and ELL learners, as it provides clear structure and focused practice with commonly used connecting words . It works well for:
