Task / challenge cards are an ideal language learning activity, and are ideal for learning stations / centers as well as solo, pair, small-group or home learning. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their language skills at their own pace in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, entirely independently of the teacher. It’s useful to work with tense and more complex language as quickly as possible, as this gives students a more realistic experience of the language they are learning.
This set focuses on the conjugation of irregular English verbs in the present tense, featuring both the simple present tense and the present continuous / progressive tense. Regular verbs are also included, again to make the language more realistic, but they are not the focus of the questions. The questions are aimed at intermediate English students who are consolidating their knowledge of the English present tense.
The CEFR level is roughly A2, with some reference to B1. The content is suitable for students aged around 15 onwards, featuring vocabulary such as cost of living, college / university tuition fees and the potential risks of friendship apps. The range of language provides students with an opportunity to enrich their English vocabulary generally.
The questions range in complexity and challenge, and some call upon prior knowledge, and address a range of language that may be entirely new and unfamiliar to students. These questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language, meaning that the activity is not solely about practising and consolidating learned language, but also actively engaging with, and learning new language. A range of grammatical concepts are addressed, such as question formats in both the positive and negative form, sentence structure and word order, direct and indirect objects and personal pronouns.
To maximise the learning potential of the questions, it’s useful to look at the multiple-choice questions as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices. Identifying errors, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses.
The set comprises the following non-editable files:
= 48 differentiated question cards, 6 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Laminate if possible, as the cards are more learner-friendly, and will remain in excellent condition for years. It’s not necessary to cut out individual cards - simply laminate the pages, saving considerably on prep time.
= answer key - providing students with additional opportunity to engage with language, helping them develop more independence in their learning, and a great teacher time-saver too. It’s fine to distribute this electronically to students, rather than printing out and photocopying.
= answer recording booklet - print and photocopy an appropriate number for your class. Students often use these only for more formal assessment purposes, and generally use their class workbooks to note and work out responses, saving prep time and expense.
= vocabulary bank template booklet - if students don’t have their own vocabulary bank workbooks, this is useful for them to note any new language and develop their own vocabulary bank as a longer-term reference resource.
