Raising Awareness of Cultural Diversity ESL Lesson

Raising awareness of cultural diversity lesson/ice-breaker for ESL/ELL learners. This unit is ideal for back to school to raise awareness of cultural diversity in your classroom. It can be used to know students' cultural background better and to install a welcoming classroom atmosphere where learners are aware of each other's rich cultural background. This resource also promotes tolerance, understanding, acceptance and respect of other cultures' values and traditions. It can be used with older learners or even adults. Students should have a minimum of low-intermediate proficiency level to be able to carry out the activities, however, the teacher's support will be needed all along. A higher proficiency level is more preferable if you want your students to work more independently.

⭐What is included?

• The mini lesson develops all three ESL competencies: oral interaction, reading comprehension & reinvestment of understanding and writing.

• This resource also includes a project component which requires students to research their country of origin and present it a "Travel Fair" organized in class. Students can choose to create a blog, poster, brochure, PowerPoint presentation, Prezi or other digital material or simply a portfolio. The possibilities are endless.

• The final writing task evaluates students' competency of reinvestment of understanding (using information from the activities) and writing. Students may write a letter or an email that they will send to you.

The resource is ready to be used, everything you need is included in the document, except for the article (text). In the document, you will find a link to access the online article that students will need to read in order to answer the reading comprehension questions. The teaching duration: Depending on your students' level, pace and the number of times you meet them, they might need more or less time to carry out the activities.
