Educational Talk Response Journal: Focus

This foldable response journal will help students to reflect on such ideas as: long-term focus, short-term concentration, strategies for eliminating distractions, ways of being successful, what success is, how to achieve success, setting goals, focusing on goals, being the best at what we do. This resource has been designed to be used with the educational talk entitled: The Importance of Focus, speech given by speaker Richard St. John (Data provided by TED).

The teaching duration is an estimate. Depending on your students' pace and proficiency level, you may spend more or less time on this activity.

⭐How can you use this resource?

• You may use this resource to develop learners’ competency of reinvestment of understanding of texts or practice listening skills – listen for global understanding and listen for specific information.

⭐Best uses:

• as a mini lesson to practice speaking, listening and writing skills
• as an activity around St. Patrick's Day (or all year round),
• as an emergency sub plan,
• as a listening activity to introduce a new unit,
• as an extra activity
• as a time-filler activity

• Plan (clearly defined purpose of each response process phase: explore, connect, go beyond; competencies/skills being developed)

⭐The response journal includes the following phases of the response process:

• Before listening/watching - Brainstorming and predicting
• While listening/watching - Learners will answer a couple of comprehension questions (explore phase/listen for specific information)
• After listening/watching - a) Connect to the text phase: Learners are required to establish connection with the text (guided questions) and b) Go beyond the text phase: Learners are required to reinvest new information from the video both in small discussion teams and writing (discussion and writing prompts are provided in the document).

I recommend using this educational talk and response journal with more advanced (upper-intermediate, advanced) and more mature ESL/EESL students such as Grades 9-12 or Adult Education. This resource might be useful in an ELA class, as well.
