French Learning Essentials

This bundle contains two resources that complement each other wonderfully in order to dive deeper in the analysis of the beautiful story of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Please see the detailed description below for each resource in order to gain more insight into what they are all about:

Resource #1 – Étude de texte

The main goal of this resource is to enhance the reading comprehension skills of your students, based on a very popular book all around the world, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Based on the reading level of your readers, you may choose how you would like them to use this resource:

  • For (highly) advanced readers, you can let them read the book on their own and answer the questions independently chapter by chapter.

  • For intermediate-level readers, you can start the book by guided reading (either you read the chapter or you let your students read it out loud, giving a turn to everyone in the class) before answering the questions in this resource (together or individually for the first few chapters). After reading each chapter (at least for the first few chapters of the book), it is worthwhile to have a class discussion about the content of a particular chapter before answering the related questions. Reading out loud the first few chapters is a strategy from which everyone in the class could benefit, independently from their reading level.

  • For readers facing challenges, you can use scaffolding strategies, such as chunking the text (a chapter), explaining key words prior to reading a chapter, etc. These students might also benefit from working together with intermediate-level and/or advanced readers. (Reading groups could be created in advance with mixed-level readers).

Please note that this resource does not contain the original images of the book, nonetheless I hope that the selected images will provide additional support to your readers.

Resource #2 – Affiche

This resource contains 22 colourful posters with famous quotes from The Little Prince, a novel by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry – none of the images are the actual drawings of the author. The posters are followed by ‘sticky notes’ to be used together with the posters (optional) – see the preview to check out some of the posters and the ‘sticky notes’. I would suggest to laminate both the posters and the sticky notes so they remain in good condition for future use.

You may use this resource in a variety of ways (these are just some examples):

  1. You can simply use the posters to decorate your classroom – (I would suggest the posters in classrooms for older grades, as the meaning of the quotes can be more difficult to understand for younger children).
  2. Culminating task: After reading the novel – Gallery walk -

Dans le monde du Petit Prince (you can give a title for the gallery walk):

    • Place the posters all around in your classroom (even in the hallway (if you can) adjacent to your room.
    • Explain the task to your students:
      • Decide at the beginning if you want your students to walk alone or in small groups.
      • Show the samples on the sticky notes when explaining the task. You can leave these notes on your white board as a reference point for students to check if the task is completed correctly.
        • Students will need to reflect on the quotes as they walk and pause at each poster and write their thoughts on sticky notes (these can be actual sticky notes you hand out to your students).
          • You can decide at the beginning of the activity if you would like your students to write a reflection for each poster or just for some.
          • Here are some examples prepared for you on the ‘sticky notes’ you can show to your students as samples:
            • Cette image me fait penser…
            • Après avoir lu ce passage, je me souviens…
            • En regardant cette image, je peux faire un lien à…
            • En lisant ce passage, à mon avis, l’auteur veut dire que…
            • Après avoir lu cette citation, je me demande…
            • Etc.

There are also samples for possible answers!

        • After the students finish walking around and writing their thoughts on the ‘sticky notes’, the students will gather together either in small groups or as a class to share their thinking.
