Picture Walk: Character Education (Inference)
This activity pack focuses on character education and it helps students brainstorm/reflect on classroom expectations, consequences of inappropriate behaviour, coping with stress before and during exams, good study habits, setting goals and ways to engage in their own learning. Ideal for back to school or all year round.
Use this differentiated Picture Walk activity to build inference skills and develop speaking and writing skills (response to text). This resource contains images showing different situations, and learners need to offer as many details as possible using the visual cues and guiding questions. Teaching tips/directions are included in the downloaded file. If you are not familiar with Picture Walk, read my blog post on the Picture Walk reading strategy here.
⭐This resource can also be used to practice:
- Information questions and WHO-questions (question words)
- The Simple Present Tense
- The Present Progressive/Continuous Tense
- Unreal conditionals (Second conditional/If-clauses)
- Modal auxiliary verb: may/might
⭐What is included?
- This packet includes four differentiated activities.
- Coloured and black and white versions.
- Canadian and US spelling.
- The downloaded resource contains practical information about how to use this packet and tips for differentiated instruction.
⭐This resource is ideal for:
- Developing oral interaction/speaking and writing skills
- Forming and answering information questions.
- Making inferences.
- Practicing grammar
⭐Best uses:
- Back to school/first week of school
- Individual, pair or group work.
- Providing practice in making inferences.
⭐The four differentiated activities cover:
Level 1 Activity : These cards contain images and guiding questions to help learners make inferences and develop their speaking skills.
Level 2 Activity allows learners to answer the questions at their own pace. Some students might not be able to talk a lot during oral interaction because they need more time to think about their answers. So, they have a chance to make inferences based on the visual cues by answering the guiding questions in writing.
Level 3 Activity is more difficult as students have to form their own questions. This activity is ideal to practice the formation of information questions. In addition, the guiding questions from the previous tasks (Levels 1 and 2) might serve as models for learners to write their own interrogative sentences.
Level 4 Activity require learners to write the story of the image.
This resource is appropriate for Grade 9-11 learners and you may use it in ESL, EESL, EFL or Special Education classes. I included a very thorough preview so you can determine if this resource is appropriate for your learners. This unit is designed for ESL learners, however, it might be useful in ELA classes, especially in a Special Education context.
The teaching duration may depend on your students' proficiency level and the number of times you assign these activities to your learners. However, this packet should be used during the first week of school. You may also assign these activities to your learners whenever they need to be reminded of the expected classroom behaviour.
