French Learning Essentials

This resource (Mots en action – La salle de classe) contains a variety of activities that your students will benefit from. It focuses on the vocabulary of the classroom while learning and reinforcing the proper way to create sentences at the beginning of their second language learning journey. At the same time, this resource will also enable students to have fun as well as to take ownership of their learning by learning more and more to rely on learning tools that surround them in their classrooms: centers, word walls, activity corners, you name it!

Here you will find a brief description of each resource that this product contains.

✏️ Worksheets

This resource will promote the following skills:

  • Word recognition
  • Spelling
  • Association of words of the same family (mots de la même famille) - (this concept does not need to be taught prior to completing the pages in this resource; however it brings early awareness to this concept – e.g., un taille-crayon – tailler)
  • Distinction between c’est/ce sont and il y a
  • Proper sentence structures with c’est/ce sont and il y a
  • Word definition

This resource is to be used at the primary level (French immersion) or grades 4 and 5 (Core French – Canadian context). Students would need to have been introduced to the vocabulary of the classroom, as well to the structures c’est/ce sont and il y a prior to using the worksheets.

This resource can be used in a center, as an independent assignment or as a bell-work activity. The worksheets can be handed out as individual worksheets or as a little booklet (there is a cover page included) – the pages are not numbered. Some sheets can be a bit more challenging to some students (sentence formation), therefore, it is suggested to use the sheets individually.

The 3 posters are included with the worksheets. You can check them out here.

✏️ Flash cards

Content:

- 200 flashcards (PDF)

- 1 editable file (PowerPoint)

This resource contains 200 printable flashcards in 3 sets (all with colourful images), as well as an editable file with 7 pages.  All printable flashcards are in the same file as follows:

1st set (pages 8 to 27) – 80 flashcards: These are large size flashcards (10x13.5cm) with 80 words altogether.

These cards can be used either on a word wall/white board or in a center activity. Due to their large size, it can be useful to place some cards on the white board where students are all able to see them from their desks. For example, you can introduce an activity by placing some of the cards on the board (e.g., Pour cette activité, tu vas avoir besoin d’un crayon, de ton cahier, etc). It is especially useful in grade 1 French Immersion and grade 4 Core French (Canadian context) when the students are introduced to these words the first time.

These cards can also be used for labelling objects in the classroom.

2nd set (pages 28 to 37) – 80 flashcards: These cards (size 6x9cm) have the same words as the large flashcards. You can have the option of either using the big cards or the smaller ones on your word wall. Or you can have these cards kept together with a metal ring in one of your centers. It is also a great option to have a couple of sets of these cards at a designated location - your students can borrow them in order to complete their workbooks at their desks. Since there are 80 words in the set, you can choose how many flashcards you would like to keep together as study cards for your class, and you can increase the number of words on your word wall/ board and class set throughout the year.

Matching Card Game: You can also make two sets of these small cards (using about 15 to 20 words of this set) to create a memory game. It is a great way to practice the vocabulary and have fun at the same time.

Please see the link above (Flash Cards) for the list of words on the cards.

3rd set (pages 38-47) – 40 flashcards: These Flashcards (size: 9.5x13.5cm) are for whole sentences with c’est/ce sont and il y a. They were created in order to help student differentiate between c’est/ce sont and il y a, as students (especially those who speak English as their first language) have/might have more difficulty differentiating between the two at the beginning. These cards will help them understand between identifying on object (Qu’est-ce que c’est? – C’est un livre.) and presenting an object (Qu’est-ce qy’il y a dans ta trousse? – Il y a un crayon dans ma trousse.)

These cards can be used alongside the ‘word’ flashcards in order for the students to see how to create proper sentences when describing objects they use on a daily basis. Some words from the list below can be/are more challenging (e.g., pince-notes). You can keep them aside until you feel your students are ready to use them. I included these types of words in the list as students always use English words instead (Est-ce que je peux avoir un ‘clipboard’, un ‘binder clip’, etc.).

Please follow the link above to see the list of sentences on the 3rd set of cards.
