ESL Oral Activity - Finding My Other Me!
*** FINDING MY OTHER ME, A DIFFERENTIATED ACTIVITY FOR EVERYONE ***
A subsequent activity of the well-known ALL ABOUT ME activity! ***
Promote ORAL INTERACTION with this DIFFERENTIATED mingle activity in your ESL class. Students will enjoy creating new names by mixing one's own name with that of a classmate!
THIS DIFFERENTIATED ACTIVITY CAN BE USED AS:
- A back-to-school icebreaker activity.
- A subsequent "All About Me" activity.
- A regular oral activity.
- It suits ALL STUDENTS! Use both variants of the activity to meet the NEEDS of your students. Variant 2 takes off the load of writing the answers!
INSTRUCTIONS:
- There is a vocabulary reference sheet to help students WRITE and SAY the answers. Project it on the whiteboard!
- There are two variants of the activity. Four different models of each to suit different levels (Grades 3-6) and the students' needs.
- Each student has to interview four classmates. Be part of the game to build rapport with your students.
- Ecourage students to ask complete questions and give full answers.
- Wrap-up the activity by sharing the NEW names with the entire class!
PEDAGOGICAL TIP!
This is mainly an oral interaction activity, however, Variant 1 requires students to write down the classmates' answers. Do not hesitate to differentiate it as follows:
Option 1: Print the worksheet with the less amount of questions for your less competent students and viceversa.
Option 2: Reduce the amount of students to interview. Let less competent students to interview just two or three classmates.
Option 3: Give Variant 1 of the activity to your more competent students. Writing gives them an extra challenge. Give Variant 2 of the activity to less competent students to simplify their lives!
Option 4:
Differentiation is setting LEARNING FOR ALL contexts!
NOTE: Inspired from the many "All About Me" activities, here it is "Finding My Other Me". I personnally use it as a subsequent mingle activity to promote the use of English in class. Students with higher competency level do Variant 1 very smoothly. Less competent students in English appreciate doing Variant 2.
Happy teaching!
