Career Research Project ESL/ELA

Engage and motivate your learners with this differentiated career research project booklet that could be an ideal extension activity for a unit on career planning/finding one's career path. However, it can also be used as stand-alone research project. This document contains 2 versions so you can differentiate more easily.

UPDATE - DECEMBER 2019: Differentiated resource (two versions; older version is still included), updated fonts, slightly new design, updated content - pre-writing activities included (job vocabulary, skills and character traits), new assessment grid (brochure).

⭐The downloaded file includes:

• pre-writing activities: job vocabulary match, skills and personality traits, and a short lead-in activity helping learners to choose a career/job they want to research.

• brainstorming sheet and research notes sheet (2 pages)
• monitoring one's progress sheet (work plan)
• planning sheet with guiding questions
• Option 1: templates for planning and/or writing the first draft of the brochure/video script/Power Point presentation depending on which of the options students have chosen
• Option 2 also includes writing sheets for rough draft and final copy
• Assessment grid for written production (You may also use this rubric to assess students' videos as oral texts).
• Assessment grid for brochure (You may also use it for the Power Point presentation)

⭐Specifications:

Option 1: It is designed for individual, pair or group work. Its focus is on researching a career choice and creating a brochure, video or Power Point presentation. The focal point of this version is researching the career path/job and creating a visually appealing and comprehensive brochure, video or Power Point presentation.

Option 2: It is ideal for individual work, but it can also be carried out in pairs or teams. This version focuses more on researching and writing skills as students have to write a text and present it using visual support such as a poster. Thus, the written production is the focal point of this project.

Since Option 2 has two components, a written production (research topic) and the presentation of the research paper using visual aids, I allot 80% of the final grade to the written production and 20% to the presentation of the research paper. I also mark the completion of all required steps in the project workbook. You may edit weighing in the PPT version of the workbook.

Some preparation is required: printing and making extra copies of some of the worksheets if necessary.

⭐Assessment of the written production:

• The included rubric has been designed to assess two of the ESL competencies (Québec ESL program): C2 - Reinvests understanding and C3 - Writes and produces texts. However, you might simply use the part which evaluates only writing skills (content and formulation of the message) if you do not wish to assess reinvestment of understanding.

⭐Assessment of the project presentation:

• Criteria: content (Are all requirements present?), aesthetics/creativity, completion of project workbook, language and accuracy.

However, feel free to use your own evaluation rubric to assess students' presentation. If you assess speaking skills, you may want to focus on specific criteria required by common core state standards.
