This thematic unit TAKING RISKS is a comprehensive ESL competency-based, student-centered, differentiated learning and evaluation situation with a touch of growth mindset philosophy to contribute to students' well-being, motivation and personal development. This resource offers a wide range of opportunities to develop and assess the ESL competencies/skills. Learners have a chance to constantly use and reinvest reading strategies, vocabulary, language and information so they can acquire and confidently produce language. It is a high-interest unit that saves you at least four weeks of prepping time.

This resource is appropriate for Grade 9-11 ESL, EESL, EFL or Special Education learners. I included a very thorough preview so you can determine if this resource is appropriate for your students. This unit is designed for ESL learners; however, it might be useful in ELA classes, especially in a Special Education context.

⭐Teaching duration: approximately 5-6 periods of 75 minutes (+ two classes for the final project if it is done in class). If you see your students twice a week, this unit should cover three or four weeks, maybe more, depending on your students' pace.
